Tongue Thrust Therapy
Agape Speech Therapy has been your expert partner for language processing disorders, tongue thrust, and speech therapy as well as other speech AND LANGUAGE disorders.
We work with children (infant to 21) and adults of all ages recovering from brain surgeries, brain injuries, TIA, stroke, post cancer treatment as well as other speech disorders.
For children or adults who have a crossbite, overbite or other functional problem and require orthodontic braces, it is important to have an evaluation for tongue thrust by a speech therapist to ensure that when your braces come off, your teeth are not pushed back into an unsightly position by the force of your tongue pressing on your teeth as you speak and swallow.
This condition often goes unidentified by the orthodontist but can be detected by a certified speech therapist. If not corrected, braces have to be put on a second time as the thrusting pushes your teeth into an abnormal bite and alters your smile.
Tongue thrust can also be noted when the tongue protrudes through the teeth on fricative sounds - where it doesn't belong.
Congitive, Speech and Communication Disorders
At Agape Speech Therapy we provide therapy for language processing disorders and/or language expression disorders such aphasia. We also provide therapy for cognitive communication disorders resulting from brain injury and dementia. We use augmentative and alternative communication (including gestural/sign-based communication, speech devices and artificial larynx). We also provide education and training of caregivers and community groups, community-based and home-based services, consultation as well as education services.
